As part of an ongoing series on the viewing habits of typical otaku, we sat down with magical girl fan and devout Mormon Elijah Smith to get his thoughts on the first episode of Majuu Jouka Shoujo Utea.

“I know people wouldn’t think it given my religion, but I’m a big fan of magical girl shows like Lyrical Nanoha and Precure. I don’t know what captivates me about them, I think they just remind me of my childhood, you know, watching shows like The Powerpuff Girls. Sure they’re a bit formulaic but there’s something pure and innocent about them that keeps me coming back.”

According to Smith, a friend heard how much he loves magical girl shows and recommended a show called Majuu Jouka Shoujo Utea, which Smith recently started.

“It’s not on Crunchyroll so I had to use a pirate site. This site sure has a lot of dirty advertisements, but I guess that’s standard for these sorts of websites. Personally I’m against porn in all forms, so I’ll try to avert my eyes so I can watch this innocent magical girl show.”

“I’m only a few minutes in and it’s pretty decent, if kinda generic. The main character Karen and her friend Mizuki see this monster and they transform into magical girls. There’s a transformation sequence, which my eyes always kinda glaze over for, and then we get their backstory, then it’s right into battle.”

“I’m really curious how they’re going to defeat the monster. It’s got all these tentacles on its back, which could be used for all sorts of cool attacks. Will the girls defeat it easily with their purifying weapons, or will it be a struggle? I guess I’ll unpause and get back to you.”

Elijah refused to provide any further comments on Majuu Jouka Shoujo Utea, but his facial expressions showed confusion, disgust, and a sense that something deep inside him was awakening.
