Netflix revealed this week that, in collaboration with Epic Games, select character models from their upcoming Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 anime series would be coming to the smash hit online game Fortnite.
Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 will be utilizing a fully 3D animation art style different from previous entries in the franchise. Netflix stated that the new visual style was key in allowing cross promotional opportunities, as opposed to a traditional art style which would require more effort to utilize.
Select Ghost in the Shell characters will be released as limited time promotional skins for the game during the premiere week of the new series. A special in-game Tachikoma vehicle will also be available during the event.
Netflix did not say which characters specifically would be coming to Fortnite, though it did tease that fans can expect a significant portion of the cast to make their way into the game. Both Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 and Fortnite are based on Unreal Engine 4, allowing the conversion of assets between the two to be nearly seamless.
“The tools Epic has provided have really helped to reduce our production time and streamline the animation process,” stated series director Shinji Aramaki. “I am truly excited to be able to work on exploring more of the Applese… Ghost in the Shell universe.”
Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 is set for an unspecified release date next year. Netflix also hinted at another future collaborative project with Epic Games which would finally bring the excitement of the battle royale genre to the world of Akira.
